One of Art Market Liaison’s all-time favorite artists, Olga de Amaral (b. Bogotá, 1932–2021) transformed the field of textile art with her richly layered, architecturally complex works that straddle the worlds of fiber, sculpture, and painting. Over a seven-decade career, de Amaral built an international reputation for her innovative use of materials – especially her incorporation of gold leaf, a nod to both pre-Columbian traditions and the Japanese art of kintsugi. Her handwoven abstractions evoke sacred landscapes, spiritual rituals, and the transcendence of light and texture, solidifying her place as a pioneer of contemporary Latin American art.

Having tracked de Amaral’s career for over a decade, as art advisors, we have watched her trajectory and seen her market achieve extraordinary momentum in recent years. 2025 marks her strongest auction year to date, with a new artist record of $1.17 million set for Imagen perdida 27 at Phillips New York in May 2025 – a 67% leap over her previous high. Just one year prior, Pueblo X sold for $698,500 at Sotheby’s New York, already a significant milestone with a 25% gain above her earlier record. With her estate now represented by our friends at Lisson Gallery, these results underscore growing institutional and collector interest in de Amaral’s work, positioning her as a leading figure in both the art historical canon and the global art market.

Now on at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, de Amaral’s latest exhibition offers a rare chance to see her luminous works up close. On view from May 1 to October 12, 2025, the show builds on her acclaimed 2021-2023 retrospective at the Fondation Cartier in Paris, bringing new audiences into contact with her immersive and meditative practice. The major presentation brings together more than 50 works spanning six decades and features both recent and historical pieces, some of which have never been shown outside of Colombia. The landmark exhibition reveals the full breadth and complexity of Amaral’s practice, tracing her evolution from vibrant explorations of the grid to bold experiments with materiality, gold leaf, and scale.
